To dehydrate dairy products are a smart alternative when you cannot access refrigeration. Some powders are available in well-sorted stores or accessible online, such as cream and milk powder (lactose-free options are also available). However, getting hold of dried cheese is more complicated. Luckily, dehydrating hard cheese on your own is easy!

Cheese is nutritious and flavourful, which makes it a perfect ingredient in many recipes for trail food. For example, sprinkle chopped and dried blue cheese over pasta and let it melt or put dried pieces of hard cheese into a minestrone.

In general, it is best to use low-fat dairy products. This applies especially to wet dairy products. If you want to dehydrate crème fraiche, choose the version with a lower fat percentage.
